Messi scored in injury time when Argentina defeated Iceland in preparation for the World Cup

Lionel Messi scored just minutes after returning from injury as Argentina beat Iceland 3-0 in their World Cup final in Auburn, Alabama on Tuesday.

Messi started on the bench, as the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner returned to fitness after leaving Inter Miami’s 6-4 win over Philadelphia with muscle strain on May 24.

He was joined on the flanks at the start by Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister as Lionel Scaloni named a tryline in front of a crowd of 88,000.

Messi is expected to participate in his sixth World Cup and allay fears he may not be ready for the tournament’s 20-minute start.

Argentina will begin their World Cup defense against Algeria on June 16 before facing Austria and Jordan in Group J.

Iceland should have taken the lead within the first few minutes when Mikael Egill Ellertsson shot over the bar.
