Toquero at just 13 years old, won the Palaro gold for the second year in a row following her victory in the secondary girls category in the Datu Lipus Makapandong Gov. Democrito O. Plaza Sports Complex in Prosperidad on Monday, May 25.
Her victory came just a year after she broke Palaro’s record in the elementary girls class with a throw of 49.77 meters in the 2025 edition of Ilocos Norte.
“I’m very happy to get the gold medal,” said Toquero, who beat much tougher opponents.
Toquero of Escalante City, Negros Occidental won gold this year with a throw of 45.22 meters. Competitors at the secondary level use a javelin that weighs 500 grams, heavier than the 400g variant used at the elementary level.
“I didn’t expect to get gold because I only managed 42 meters in the regionals,” said Toquero.
Toquero started out as a runner, competing in the 800 and 1,500 meters, before switching to the javelin when he was in the 5th grade.
The change paid off and he dreams of representing the country at the biggest sporting events.
