Sheikh Hasina, who is in India, says she will return in December with other party members
The former prime minister of Bangladesh, who is in exile in India after being ousted in a rebellion, says he could be killed in his country, where he plans to surrender to a court in December.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and members of her Awami League party will surrender when they return from India, she told Reuters late Thursday. The 78-year-old was the longest-serving leader of the South Asian nation.
“They may arrest me when I return, they may even kill me,” Hasina said in a telephone interview with a news agency.
He vowed to return to Bangladesh this year in an interview last month.

The former Prime Minister insists that legal action against him will expose what he calls a politically motivated case.
He is accused of suppressing the opposition and undermining democracy, which he denies.

After Hasina fled to India, the Bangladesh International Criminal Court (ICT) issued a death sentence for he is not there for alleged crimes against humanity during the suppression of the rebellion led by the students. He has denied the charges.
“I have to go,” He said in the interview and added that the members of his party are subjected to such actions “great oppression” in Bangladesh.
“If death comes, I want it to come to my land, where my parents are buried and where their blood was shed.”
Hasina is the daughter of Bangladesh’s first president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was killed in a military coup in 1975. Her mother, brothers, and several other relatives were also killed in their Dhaka residence.
Hasina said Dhaka has been sending letters to India to bring her back. “I will go myself,” He said.
Hasina’s father was a founding leader of the Bangladesh liberation movement. He was known as the ‘father of the nation’ before the transitional government of Muhammad Yunus, which took over after Hasina’s ouster, removed all such references to him.
Hasina, who dominated the country’s politics for decades and is credited with bringing about economic reforms, ruled for about 20 years, albeit intermittently.
