BRUSSELS – MEPs from the European Parliament and the Council of the EU suspended negotiations on air passenger rights reform Wednesday morning without reaching an agreement, but agreed to continue the talks in the afternoon.
The talks ended at 5 am after 16 hours of endless discussions on several parts of the reform, including the delay threshold for granting the right to compensation and the level of compensation that passengers would receive.
The Council and Parliament tried unsuccessfully to agree on a flat compensation amount, regardless of the flight distance. But the idea failed to convince many countries, as MEPs pushed to increase the amount to €350 and include an inflation adjustment mechanism, making the proposal unattractive even to governments already skeptical of high compensation costs.
