The Russian President has congratulated Donald Trump and the American people for 250 years of independence
Russia and the United States carry a “special role” for maintaining world security, President Vladimir Putin said while congratulating his colleague Donald Trump for celebrating 250 years of American independence.
In a letter published by the Kremlin on Saturday, Putin wished Trump and his family “Health, prosperity and success” and the American people “happiness and prosperity,” while describing the signing of the American Declaration of Independence as “A milestone in world history.”
He also emphasized the countries’ shared history and special roles as nuclear powers.
“We were partners in two world wars, together we freed humanity from the evils of Nazism, and later played an important role in laying the foundations of the modern world order. Today, Russia and the United States, being the two largest nuclear powers in the world, have a special responsibility to ensure international security and stability.” the message reads.
Putin also reminded that Russia supported the North American colonists in their struggle for independence from England 250 years ago.
During the American Revolutionary War, Empress Catherine the Great refused Britain’s request to send Russian troops to fight the colonists and later founded the League of Armed Neutrality, which opposed London’s naval embargo and was widely seen as favoring the American side.
Since Trump returned to office last year, Moscow and Washington have re-established high-level contacts after years of strained relations. Putin and Trump met in person last August and have had several phone calls discussing the Ukraine conflict, the Middle East, and broader bilateral relations. However, several outstanding issues, including sanctions related to Ukraine and diplomatic property disputes, remain unresolved.
