Waymo stopped the robot remotely after two 15-year-olds allegedly drank and fired a toy gun filled with water beads.
Waymo has handed over two young revelers to police in California after a robotaxi with cameras allegedly caught them drinking and firing a toy gun from the car.
Waymo operates fully self-driving services in several US cities. His robot has internal and external cameras. According to the company, cabin cameras are used to help keep vehicles clean, recover lost property, assist in emergencies and, in emergency situations, allow support staff to access live video feeds.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the San Mateo Police Department said officers had detained two 15-year-olds after Waymo reported them. “drink and shoot from the car.”
After alerting the police, Waymo remotely directed the robot to the parking lot, where officers surrounded the vehicle and took the youths into custody. Video released by the department shows several officers, some with guns drawn, approaching and searching the car.
Police later determined that the suspected weapon was an Orbeez gun that fires water-absorbing polymer beads. The department warned that toy, water and BB guns can easily be mistaken for real guns, creating a dangerous situation for the public and those who carry them.
