Hong Myung-bo expects the atmosphere to feel like a home game when his South Korean team play South Africa in their final World Cup Group A match in Monterrey.
A large number of Mexican fans supported the Taeguk Warriors as they defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in the opening game in Guadalajara, and head coach Hong expects similar support on Wednesday.
“We can feel like this is our home ground tomorrow, and that’s a huge gift for our players,” said Hong, who captained South Korea’s semi-final team at the 2002 World Cup against Japan. “We will use it well so that we can play a good game tomorrow.”
There is a great cause to support.
In the 2018 World Cup, South Korea beat Germany 2-0 to send Mexico into the round of 16 and Mexican fans marched to the South Korean consulate in Monterrey to celebrate, chanting “Brother, Korean, you are already Mexican (Brother Korean, now you are Mexican)!”
Since then, football fans from the two nations have developed ties despite cultural differences.
