Pakistan’s boycott of their match against India has created a lot of controversy. Although, it seems to be resolved now. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that Pakistan will play India in their 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup Group Stage match. The match is scheduled to be played on February 15 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
In a statement released late on Monday (February 9), the ICC said discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had led to a resolution. “All members will honor their commitments as per the conditions of participation of ICC events and do whatever is necessary to ensure the ongoing edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is a success,” the ICC noted.
Background of the decision
The dispute erupted after the Pakistan government last week directed their team not to play against India. This decision was made out of solidarity with Bangladesh, who withdrew from the tournament due to security reasons. The action raised fears about the fate of the fight, which is the basis of the tournament’s finances and international viewing.
Following requests from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Sri Lanka, the UAE, and other member nations, Pakistan has reconsidered its position. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who urged Pakistan to resolve the dispute. The government later ordered the PCC to take the field on February 15, stressing the importance of protecting the spirit of cricket.
ICC position on Bangladesh
The ICC court also confirmed that Bangladesh will not face any penalty for withdrawing from the tournament. Additionally, Bangladesh will also host the ICC event between 2028 and 2031,
ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said: “Bangladesh’s absence is regrettable, but it does not change our enduring commitment to Bangladesh as cricket’s premier nation.”
