Gardyn Home 4.0 (read my full review here) was one of the easiest indoor gardens to assemble out of the box; it also gave the biggest breakthrough of any brand I tried. Flowers, kohlrabi, thyme, and even whole cauliflower were all grown in this basic tube system with lights in front to allow for long plant growth.
The seeds arrive in proprietary pods called yCubes. Part of what makes Gardyn stand out is the subscription plugin, “Kelby,” which monitors your plants through sensors and attached cameras. It offers custom watering and lighting schedules, as well as maintenance recommendations via AI (which an anonymous source told me is basically OpenAI’s ChatGPT with a built-in tip). This subscription adds extra $259 per year at the basic purchase price, although it includes a certain number of credits per month, depending on whether you have a Home or Studio model, which you can use. buy new yCubes. There is a 30-day free trial of Kelby, but you can use Gardyn without it depending on the lighting and watering controls. Also, there have been recent privacy issues with Kelby (more below).
Every Gardyn purchase comes with your choice of yCube sets: “Salad Lover,” “Beginner Florist,” or “Chef Faves.” I’ve tried both “Budding Florist” and “Chef Faves,” and my favorite is the latter; it has an interesting variety of everything from breen and Tokyo bekana greens to Thai basil and small sunflowers. Although Gardyn recommends setting up yCubes in a company plugin $80 nurseryI have dreamed many yCube in the system well. (Make sure you don’t add nutrients until they sprout. If you’re sprouting the yCubes later, when the nutrients are already in the system, you can just use a shallow bowl with a loosely sealed plastic wrap.) The seeds arrive potted. mineral woolthey draw in their small yCubes that fit into large cups (“yPods”) that fit into the pipes. When Gardyn waters the plants, the yPods fill the water with nutrients, and the roots of the plants grow in the water.
Once a month, the base needs to be wiped and scrubbed. Every few weeks, the roots need to be checked for root rot and growth outside of the yPod, checked for pruning time, and/or pulled back if they have strayed too far. This maintenance is admittedly hard work, and if you don’t do it regularly, you will regret it when cleaning the garden and preparing it for its next planting. (Ask me how I know!)
Now I have two Gardyns, 4 Houses and a Studio 2which has improved cameras and columns. Aside from a couple of funky yCubes (which the company will replace if requested), I have no major complaints about the system. Although I will notice that the plants in the Studio have been less humid overall due to the Studio having one light instead of two, so my primary recommendation remains the Home. I also like that Gardyn offers a Vacation Mode, which adjusts lighting and watering to slow growth and reduce maintenance tasks while you’re away.
NOTE: On February 24, 2026 and April 2, 2026, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) provided advice regarding vulnerabilities in Gardyn Home and Studio equipment. This security vulnerability could have allowed someone to take remote control of Gardyn’s device, access images of the plants, and obtain personal information such as names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Garden claims this vulnerability has been fixed and the most recent firmware update, and advises customers to ensure their Gardyns are connected to the Internet and running software version 619 or later. If you think your device may be affected, send an email (email protected) or call 844-4-GARDYN. For more information, see Gardyn’s Security update for Gardyn Home and Gardyn Studio.
