Donald Trump attacked Pope Leo XIV earlier this week for his comments on the war in Iran. The panelists are on Washington Week With The Atlantic they came together to discuss the president’s remarks, and what they might indicate about Trump’s message about the conflict.
Pope Leo has spoken more about his concerns about what is happening in Iran, Michael Scherer, a staff writer at Atlantiche explained last night. But in response to Trump’s backlash, Leo “has spoken in much stronger terms … about how military leaders should not use religion to justify their actions,” Scherer said.
“Catholic voters are a swing group in this country,” Scherer continued — and yet, “Trump hasn’t backed down; he says he’s not going to apologize.” The president, Scherer said, “doesn’t operate from a position of power.”
