System, a company that makes laptops designed for excellent repairannounced a new version of its flagship product, a 13-inch screen laptop. It’s called the Framework Laptop 13 Pro, and it has better battery life, a touchscreen, a haptic touchpad, and is equipped with Intel processors.
At an event in San Francisco today, System CEO Nirav Patel showed off the company’s new technology, opening up with a joke about developing an AI System—something the company doesn’t do. The whole point of the Platform, however, is to give users control over the actual technology they use.
“The industry is fighting for you to own nothing, and they own everything,” Patel said of the AI industry. “We are fighting for a future where you can own everything and be free.”
The system used the event to explain other updates coming to its 16-inch laptop. It also previewed an official developer kit and a wireless keyboard for controlling your device from the couch.
System 13 Pro
As the name implies, the 13 Pro is a step up from the company’s last offering, the System 13. It’s also more expensive, starting at $1,199 for the DIY Edition that requires assembling the computer yourself. Pre-built units start at $1,499 but can be upgraded with more features. The system says it will start shipping the 13 Pro in June.
The System’s signature move for its products is the ability to separate the object. The 13 Pro is designed with those values in mind, so its parts can be easily changed, upgraded or replaced. Four Thunderbolt 4 interfaces let you choose which ports (USB-C, HDMI, etc.) you want and then choose where to put them. Framework says it designed the laptop with cross-generational compatibility in mind, so owners of current Framebook 13 computers will be able to use the new 13 Pro parts, such as the motherboard, display and battery, and fit them into their existing machine.
The biggest change in the guts of the 13 Pro is due to the shift of the System from using an AMD processor to an Intel one. Core Ultra Series 3 processors, which the System described in its press release as “insanely efficient.” That efficiency, along with the large battery, translates to more than 20 hours of battery life when streaming 4K Netflix videos, at least that’s the claim. That’s about 12 hours more than System 13.
