The United States said it attacked Iranian military sites over the weekend and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Monday it targeted the U.S. base in retaliation, the latest in a series of talks to end the three-month war.
The attack on Iran’s Gulf coast was the result of “severe actions by Iran that included the shooting down of an MQ-1 drone operating in international waters,” the US Central Command said in a post on X.
“U.S. warplanes responded quickly by eliminating Iran’s air defenses, ground control center, and drones that posed a clear threat to ships passing through territorial waters,” CENTCOM said, adding that it would continue to protect U.S. assets and interests during the ongoing ceasefire.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Monday it targeted an air base used by the United States for airstrikes in southern Iran, without specifying which base.
Air defenses in Kuwait, where the US headquarters is located, were fending off missile and drone attacks on Monday as sirens sounded across the country, state news agency KUNA reported, without giving further details.
The United States and Iran have traded frequent strikes since a ceasefire took effect in early April as talks aimed at a more permanent deal continue. A similar exchange happened last Thursday and was explained in similar terms by both sides.
