Andrew Wright has told Hong Kong’s three athletes to “go all out from the start” as they complete their preparations for the Asian Games in Canada this weekend.
The city’s six-man squad will compete in the Triathlon World Cup in Edmonton, before moving into camp ahead of the “fight for the life of our sport” in Japan in September.
Bronze medalists in the mixed team relay in Hangzhou three years ago, any success in the individual or team races in Aichi-Nagoya would maintain the sport’s A-level status at the Hong Kong Institute of Sports.
Japan took gold in all three races in 2023, and will be favorites to do so again on home soil. China, meanwhile, will be hoping to be on the podium in all disciplines.
Qualifying for the Los Angeles Olympics can also earn A-Level status, as can gold at the National Games. But Oscar Coggins could only manage bronze in the individual race, and the team took silver.
Neither Robin Elg nor Bailee Brown, both part of the Asian Games team, have recovered from injuries in time for Canada’s marathon. Elg last competed in the National Games in November, while Brown has been out since May.
