Police believe a man allegedly killed his older brother and parents in a drug-fueled rampage at their Sydney home before returning to the scene of a “very serious” crime and being arrested, after a surviving relative called police.
Emergency services were called to a home on Juliet Close, in Rosemeadow near Campbelltown, just after 1.30am on Sunday to a man, aged in his 30s, who had allegedly been assaulted by his brother.
Inside the house, police found their 61-year-old mother and 64-year-old father both seriously injured.
Their mother was carried to the backyard of the house but police and paramedics were unable to save her life.
Their father had suffered serious head injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance officers. He was taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he later died.
The police swept the property and entered the grandmother’s house where they found the third brother, aged 37, dead inside.
The 32-year-old brother allegedly used a blunt weapon, possibly a hammer, to attack his family before fleeing the scene, preliminary investigations suggest.
“It’s a big crime scene. We haven’t found a weapon yet, but we’re working our way through the grandmother’s apartment, and then we’ll go through the house,” Superintendent Grant Healey told reporters Sunday.
“The police were faced with a very bloody scene. Violent trauma is always a terrible thing for people to deal with, and any assault with a deadly weapon is a terrible thing to deal with.
“So the police and the ambulance did a fantastic job in a very difficult situation.”
At around 2.30am, the 32-year-old suspect returned to Juliet Close in a silver car.
Police arrested him, and he is now at Campbelltown Police Station being questioned. He has not yet been charged.
Superintendent Healey said the family was not known to the police.
“This is a very sad event that there was no way for us to predict this kind of thing would happen,” he said.
Sources with knowledge of the ongoing investigation say that it seems the murder suspect was affected by drugs.
Healey said he could not confirm that yet. Police are working to piece together the hours of his disappearance.
“We are trying to trace his journey, so if anyone saw the silver sedan in the Rosemeadow area at that time of the morning, could they contact us, please?” Healey said.
Photos from the scene show a silver car being pulled over as investigative police entered the home and removed evidence in brown paper bags.
Police said they responded to reports that several people had been assaulted at home by someone known to them.
A crime scene has been established and Campbelltown police, with the assistance of the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, are investigating.
A report will be prepared for the investigation.
