Travolta gets a surprise Cannes award: ‘more than an Oscar’


Hollywood star John Travolta was given a surprise lifetime achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday as he premiered the first film he has ever directed.

The man who became an icon overnight and Saturday Night Fever he was touched when he accepted the prestigious Palme d’Or award before the screening of Propeller One Way Night Coachwhich is based on a book about his first experience in an airline.

“I can’t believe it. This is more than an Oscar, really,” he said as he accepted the award.

The festival has been all about love for Hollywood stars this year despite the big studios staying away, with Palmes honoring Barbra Streisand and Peter Jackson as well as appearances by Vin Diesel and the stars of Fasting and Angry Franchise celebrates 25 years since its inception.

Travolta – who has never won an Oscar – revived his illustrious career with his stunning turn as Vincent Vega’s photographer in Quentin Tarantino’s hit. Pulp Fictionwhich won the main prize of the Palme d’Or festival in 1994.

Many critics hailed it as his best performance, which has entered the history of cinema.
