US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday it may never be known who was at fault in a deadly strike at a girls’ school in Iran on February 28, the first day of the Iran-Iran war, that killed dozens of children.
Reuters first reported in March that a preliminary US military investigation indicated that US forces may have been responsible for the deadly attack in Minab in southern Iran. The Pentagon has since lifted the investigation but has not acknowledged any preliminary findings.
“I don’t know that they’re ever going to solve that problem,” Trump told reporters. “I don’t know that they will ever solve the problem based on whose fault it was because there were missiles flying everywhere, and it was a terrible thing that happened but there were missiles flying everywhere,” he said.
“Someone said it was our missile, maybe it wasn’t our missile but I haven’t seen anything to make me believe it,” Trump said, adding: “I don’t think it was us”.
Trump then called on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, sitting on a couch in the Oval Office, to back up his claim.
“Okay, Mr. President, we have considered the investigation very seriously, and when, when the right time is right, whatever the results will be, that will be the time to reveal,” Hegseth said.
