President Donald Trump accused Iran of leaking the wrong terms of a proposed peace deal Friday morning, less than a day after he rebuked threats of a major campaign to bomb and seize Iran’s oil infrastructure.
“The terms that Iran leaked to Fake News have nothing to do with the terms that were agreed upon, in writing,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “What they said, including their weak and pathetic statement about having an agreement, has nothing to do with reality.”
Mehr News Agency, Iran’s state news agency,published the due draftversion of the agreement that would put the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian control, freeze billions in Iranian assets and require the US to withdraw its troops. And Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also told Mehr that although the text is largely complete, “the conflicting positions of the United States have always caused confusion and disruption in this process.”
“Very disrespectful people to deal with,” Trump continued in his social media post, which did not include new threats of a renewed military campaign. “With them, there’s no such thing as dealing in good faith.”
Washington is used to the back and forth that it hasnoted Trump’s message about the conflict– cycling from using the language of all-out war to touting prospective peace agreements, sometimes on the same day.
And despite the apparent ceasefire, the administration went ahead with Thursday’s threat of two days of airstrikes against Iran, which followed the country’s downing of a US helicopter.
Trump’s vow to strike Iran “HARDLY” on Thursday sent leaders from the Gulf and South Asiastruggling to change his mindby assuring the president that an agreement is close.
That, led Trump to tell reporters in the Oval Office later Thursday that “we’ve done a major settlement of the war in Iran and we’re going to have to finalize the document” in the next few days.
