President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States and Iran have reached an agreement after nearly four months of ongoing hostilities.
The agreement includes a clause that will reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping and end restrictions that have caused turmoil in the world economy.
“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Congratulations to all! I fully approve the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, at the same time, I approve the immediate lifting of the US Navy blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
It is not yet clear whether the deal includes an agreement by the Iranians to give up their nuclear program and allow enriched uranium to be removed from the country, as Trump has claimed.
Senior Iranian officials have not yet commented publicly on the deal. But Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has helped broker the talks, also said an agreement had been reached and there would be an official signing ceremony in Switzerland on Friday.
