Trump established the Washington-led Peace Council to oversee the reconstruction and governance of the Gaza Strip. The group held its first meeting in February but has made little progress due to funding issues, logistical constraints and questions about its international and legal validity.

Meanwhile, the situation in Gaza remains dire: In the latest strike, Israeli forces killed six people, including two children and an Al Jazeera cameraman.

Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people in Israel, most of them civilians, and taking 251 hostages. The attack led to a massive Israeli military offensive in Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, most of them civilians, displaced 90 percent of Gaza’s population and destroyed large areas. A ceasefire brokered by Trump in October 2025 resulted in the release of the remaining 20 Israeli hostages.
