The UAE said an unidentified drone attacked the site of its only nuclear power plant on Sunday amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
According to the UAE Ministry of Defense, three drones entered the country “from the western border region.” While two UAVs were shot down, the third hit a power generator “out of local area” of Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Al Dhafra area. No injuries or radiation contamination were reported.
While the UAE authorities stopped short of accusing Iran directly, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the act. “An unprovoked terrorist attack,” saying it threatens national security and threatens to escalate further.
Saudi Arabia said it intercepted three drones a day after they entered its airspace from Iraq.
Regional tensions remain high as peace talks between the United States and Iran continue to stall, with both sides blaming each other for advancing unacceptable demands. Several media outlets have reported in recent weeks that US President Donald Trump is considering abandoning the fragile accord announced last month and resuming airstrikes.
Iran has accused Gulf countries hosting US military bases of facilitating attacks during the US-Israeli bombing campaign against the country on February 28.
“The truth is that the UAE was directly involved in the aggression against my country. When the attacks started, they did not even blame,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters last week on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal information that the UAE carried out covert attacks against Iran during the conflict.
