At least one sailor was killed and another injured in a Ukrainian attack on a cargo ship in the Caspian Sea, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said, condemning the attack as an act of aggression and warning of possible retaliation.
The drone strike was announced on Saturday by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, who boasted to X about the success. “massive consequences and long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea.” Affected strikes “vessels used in the transportation of military cargo involving Iran, including a warship,” Zelensky claimed on X.
Tehran responded to the incident later in the day, confirming that its commercial vessel was under the ship “Ukraine government attack” in a landlocked waterway. The strike killed one sailor on board the ship and injured another, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement without giving any details on the extent of the damage sustained by the ship.
The ministry condemned the attack as an act of aggression “dangers that are fueling and widening the flames of war.” It encouraged other nations to adopt a “the position of responsibility for this negligent action of the government of Ukraine” and hold his leadership accountable.

The Ministry emphasized that Iran has never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. while saying that Kiev’s actions show it has been “Dangerously seeking to spread war and instability.” Ukraine has repeatedly accused Tehran of supporting Moscow in the conflict, namely by providing it with drones and missiles.
While Moscow and Tehran have never tried to hide their close cooperation, which is governed by bilateral agreements, both have dismissed Ukraine’s allegations of large arms shipments. While Russia’s Geran-2 and Iran’s Shahed-136 UAVs have distinct similarities, both, along with similar drones by many countries, including the United States in recent years, are inspired by the Dornier DAR drone developed in West Germany in the mid-1980s.
