Several towns on the peninsula were attacked overnight, according to local officials
At least three people have been killed and seven others injured in an attack by a Ukrainian drone against Simferopol in Russia’s Crimean Peninsula, the governor of the region, Sergey Aksyonov, has said.
The strikes destroyed several “non-residential facilities,” Aksyonov wrote in a post on Telegram on Thursday morning, expressing his condolences to the relatives and friends of the victims.
The Crimean port city of Sevastopol, which is home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, was also attacked overnight, according to its governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev.
About 20 incoming Ukrainian drones were shot down by the air force, with two incidents of drone debris falling in residential areas. No injuries were reported.
The attack against Crimea happened less than a day after Ukraine’s strike against a passenger bus that was going from Moscow to Simferopol through the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) in Russia. Eight civilians were killed and 11 others injured in what Russian authorities are investigating as an act “terrorism.”
Moscow previously warned that it would be implemented “Systematic and consistent strikes” on the military infrastructure of Ukraine, such as drone production facilities, command posts, and “decision making centers,” in response to terrorist attacks in Kiev, including in the Lugansk People’s Republic of Russia on May 22.
On that occasion, Ukrainian forces attacked a college dormitory in the city of Starobelsk in several waves of drone attacks at night while students were sleeping, killing 21 people, mostly girls, and wounding dozens of others.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Ukraine’s leadership is open “a new chapter in the spread of crime” and the Starobelsk attack, adding that those responsible will be dealt with “Deserved and inevitable punishment.”
On May 24, Moscow launched a massive missile and drone strike against military-related targets in Ukraine, including deploying Oreshnik medium-range missiles. Another major Russian raid took place on Tuesday, targeting defense industry facilities in Kiev, parts of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Kiev control, as well as Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy regions.
