The US ambassador’s comments are supportive comments on X early Wednesday from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who described the situation as “a scarlet letter for Belgian society.”
The anger between the US and Israel comes after the Antwerp prosecutor confirmed that it proposed two mohalim charged following an investigation into alleged illegal circumcision, which must be performed by a medical professional in accordance with Belgian law.
The Belgian foreign minister immediately responded to the criticism.
“I urge you to be more restrained and see your role in the proper context,” Maxime Prévot. wrote on Xreplied White. “It is not good to criticize the country in public and damage its reputation just because you do not agree with judicial procedures. I have already told you this.”
The minister added that it was “blasphemous” to represent the lawsuits as a push to undermine religious freedom, noting that they had been initiated by “representatives of the Jewish community themselves.”
He too he invited Sa’ar to the meeting “to stop any misinterpretations” on the matter, “as you yourself recently urged against conducting diplomacy via Twitter.”
