The US High Command said the move was a response to “unprovoked aggression” in the Strait of Hormuz.
The United States announced a new round of attacks against Iran after several oil tankers were targeted while crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media reported explosions early Wednesday in the southern province of Hormozgan, including in the ports of Bandar Abbas and Sirik, as well as in Qeshm Island, near the narrow strait.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it is running “a series of aggressive attacks against Iran to set a high price for targeting and attacking commercial vessels operated by innocent civilians in international waterways.”
“The US attack is in response to Iran’s attack on three commercial ships that were passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s demonstrated aggression was unprovoked, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire.” CENTCOM said in a statement on X.
A video posted on social media reportedly shows strikes against Bandar Abbas.
Press TV shared a video it said showed another strike at the port. The section added hat several people were injured.
Axios quoted a US official as saying that the attacks targeted Iran’s air defenses, missile and drone sites and port facilities. The official said the strikes were “Four or five times the scope and power” than the previous round 10 days earlier.
Three commercial ships were hit by missiles early Tuesday, according to maritime security agencies and the British military. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari blamed Iran for the attack on the Qatari-flagged LNG tanker Al Rekayyat and called on Tehran “avoid jeopardizing the world’s energy supply.”
Iranian media, citing unnamed officials, reported that a Qatari oil tanker was attacked while crossing the Strait of Hormuz. “after ignoring repeated warnings.” Press TV, citing a government source, said traffic through the strategic waterway should be conducted in accordance with Iranian laws and through official channels.
The hostilities mark the third night of strikes since the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on June 17, and the first such strike this month. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the attacks violated the agreement.
The latest round of bombings came on the sixth day of funeral processions for Iran’s longtime supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the opening of the US-Israel air war on February 28. The celebrations drew crowds of millions in Tehran and other cities. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi attended a reception in the Iraqi city of Najaf on Tuesday.
