The hype was deafening, the stakes were high, and then in just 69 seconds, it was all over. Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the UFC at UFC 329 in Las Vegas ended in shock after the Irish star suffered a serious knee injury against Max Holloway. But when the dust settled, one question began to circulate online. Was McGregor already injured before entering the Octagon?
What happened to Conor McGregor?
McGregor wasted no time making a statement, perhaps too, too soon. Seconds into the fight, the 37-year-old landed a round left kick but landed badly on his right knee. The effect was immediate, and although he tried to continue with several more strikes, it was clear that he could not continue.
The referee stepped in just 1:09 into the first round, ending what was supposed to be a five-round rematch. UFC president Dana White responded to the situation, “I mean, I was expecting at least a one-round fight,” adding that doctors believe it could be “a torn ACL.”

Hurt plot: Was he already hurt?
Considering how quickly the fight ended and McGregor’s discomfort even before the stoppage, fans immediately began to speculate. Some questioned whether the former champion entered the fight less than 100 percent fit, especially given his injury history, including a brutal broken leg in 2021. But there is a glaring flaw in that theory, if McGregor had a knee problem, why would he open the fight with a risky move that put all his weight on that joint?
McGregor is shutting down the rumors
McGregor himself wasted no time addressing the rumours, “I had no injury(s) during the fight,” he wrote on X. “I was throwing kicks, flying and jumping, all through camp and backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I’m not dark here. I can describe it as hell.” He emphasized twice more “I was sharp and ready for this fight I can’t believe what happened.”
His coach, John Kavanagh, also dismissed the idea of ββa pre-existing injury, revealing that the actual move that caused the damage had been done repeatedly in training. “That opening jump kick was drilled every day for months, often in the warmup. Never an issue,” he said. “The knee went when (he threw) the first kick.” Even Dana White confirmed that there were no signs of previous trouble leading up to the fight.
I was sharp and ready for this fight I can’t believe what happened. The talk of me being distant when I go into battle is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am shocked what has happened. The devil is staring right in front of my face…

My head gasket is gone. It has been damaged. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, jumping and jumping, all over the camp and backstage before the fight. This came out instantly. I’m beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.

What? what’s next
The big concern now is not just what happened, it’s what happens next. McGregor hadn’t fought in over five years, and this was billed as a “comeback.” Instead, it ended before it really began.

According to our sources, many in the MMA community believe Max Holloway did not win the fight. Conor McGregor injured his knee earlier, but Max still couldn’t finish him. This has led many to argue that, had Conor not been injured, Max would have lost.β¦

It is clear that he is suffering from his knee

Fearing a serious ACL injury, his return timetable, which he had tentatively set for 2027, now appears uncertain. And for the UFC, the question is whether they can rely on McGregor to highlight the big events again?
